40 years of changing lives and finding talent at the Scottish Youth Theatre

As they celebrate their 40th anniversary this year, the SYT can look back on a proud history of instilling confidence and creativity in thousands of Scotland’s children.

They have a proud roll call of alumni including Gerard Butler, Laura Fraser, KT Tunstall and Blythe Duff ‘ but for four decades the Scottish Youth Theatre have done much more than produce stars.

The youth theatre were the vision of Gareth Wardell, who had been born in to a musical family, studied drama and taught in Lanarkshire.

It was when he was working in John Street School in the east end of Glasgow that he realised that youngsters were being held back by a lack of aspiration ‘ and so came the idea of the SYT.
